About Copy Client Kit

Current Location: A tiny island off the southern coast of Brazil.
I started Copy Client Kit in early 2017 at the urging of one of my coaches. But the real story here begins with my first attempt to break into the world of freelancing.
Ya see, I first hung my shingle as a copywriter back in January of 2015. At the time, I was living in a tiny surf town in Ecuador called Montañita. My living expenses down there were around $950 per month. Which – sadly – is exactly what I was making.
Fortunately, one of the clients I was writing for was a well-known business coach from Australia. After a couple months of working together, and him constantly increasing my workload, I decided to go out on a limb and pitch him on a barter deal:
“You put me through your $3,000 per month coaching program and I’ll write whatever you want…no limits.”
Looking back on it, this deal was nowhere near fair. The guy just didn’t need $3,000 in copywriting or content each month. But thank the heavens he said “Yes,” because that little agreement would end up changing my life.
See, this was my second attempt at becoming a freelance writer. In fact, I’d already taken another stab at it in September of 2012. But after making less than $900 per month for three months straight, my savings were running out.
So, I gave up on freelancing and pursued a more legitimate source of income. Or so I thought.
Fast forward to April of 2014, and in a moment of pure desperation, I wrote a snail mail promotion that ended up helping me build my first true micro-business (explained in more detail here).
Seeing that my writing could motivate others to take action was a game changer for me. For the first time in my life, I’d stumbled upon something I could well (that other people would actually pay for).
So, after driving results for my own business, I figured “Hey, if I was able to get results for this super ghetto company I started on my own, I should be able to get results for more established companies too.”
So, after suffering some fulfillment issues that caused me to shut down the company I’d launched in 2014, I said:
“F*** it, I’m going to try my hand at freelancing again.”
Sadly, my results were anything but spectacular. No matter how hard I hustled the job boards, or how good of a job I did for my clients, I still could not crack $1,000 per month.
So, when I saw the opportunity to work with a business coach who could point out what I was doing wrong…I took it. And like I said, thank the heavens he said “Yes,” because that little barter agreement would end up changing my life.
In fact, after three months of not being able to crack more than $1,000, I made $2,100 after my first month of coaching with him. The next month, $7,100. Six months later, I blew past my first $15,000 month.
Ya see, what I learned during our time together was that my writing ability as a copywriter was NOT the biggest factor in determining my success. Instead, it was a combination of a bunch of tiny things.
How much of an expert I was. How professionally I behaved. Whether or not I had legal proposals. The list goes on and on.
And the results didn’t lie. In fact, it’s not humanly possible to become a 700% better copywriter in 60 days. Yet that was exactly how much my bank account had grown in two short months.
Sadly, I became too focused on the money and ended up burning out. Which – if you haven’t tasted success as a freelance writer yet – is highly common. So I threw a massive pity party…Chased a million and one bright shiny objects…And watched as 2016 turned into one of the worst years of my adult life (minus meeting my wife that year).
Then, in December, I decided to get my shit together and hired another coach. More important, I went back to my roots of what had made me successful: Copywriting.
And wouldn’t ya know:
By working with a coach, I was back over $10,000 per month in just 90 days.
After seeing this happen in my life not just once – but twice – I knew I was onto something. In particular, I knew there was a proven path to achieving success as a freelance copywriter.
But at the time, almost no one was talking about. Instead, all the Facebook Groups and email lists were focused on the art and science of writing copy. So, I said “F*** it, I’m going to share what I’ve learned.”
When I first started the Copy Client Kit Facebook Group, I was that annoying guy who added all his friends without permission. Yep, sorry. But with no one else in the industry talking about this stuff, the Group rapidly picked up steam.
Fast forward a month or two and I began enrolling young writers into my coaching program. At the time, I had no idea what it meant to be a coach. I just shared what had worked for me and what I learned from all my different mentors.
And while I felt like a massive imposter, my first batch of students started getting amazing results (which are outlined here).
Fast forward to today and Copy Client Kit has helped writers across the globe to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars. Writers that – before coming into the program – had never worked with a single client.
And it’s not just the money. In fact, as I’ve experienced twice, it doesn’t matter how much someone is making: Working with the wrong clients can quickly lead to burnout. Because of that, I put equal emphasis on helping my students land clients they’re aligned with. Clients whose products and services they believe in. Products and services that live up to their promises and actually make a positive dent in the world.
So, while many copy gurus brag about the millions they’ve made for their clients, I had to take a long, hard look at my values and ask:
“Yes, but is the stuff you’re helping them sell actually making a positive difference in the world?”
In most cases, the answer was an instant and resounding “No.”
Because of that, I structured Copy Client Kit so that my students could achieve success regardless of what niche they chose to work in. And really, why not?
While it’s true some niches pay more than others, my students and I are living proof you can earn a handsome living without selling your soul!
So, if you’re a freelance writer who hasn’t quite cracked the code on success yet…
Congrats! You’re in the right place.
